I will reply to all the new comments soon. Been very busy at work and I have about 1 million posts I could do and should do, time permitting.

As to restoring the RMAN/Veritas NetBackup to a totally new set of servers, research a "redirected" restore so that Veritas lets new hostnames access the tapes. Something you could also do is set the parameters so they match what production had.

Specifically NB_ORA_SERV=master_server, NB_ORA_CLIENT=oracle_hostname, NB_ORA_POLICY=ORACLE_PRODUCTION. For more details on a redirected restore, look here http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/278894.htm

I have recently had a problem where file system backups worked but RMAN backups failed. The problem was permissions on the bp.conf file on the client. bpclntcmd -pn and bpclntcmd -self also failed on the client before the bp.conf permissions were modified.

I have a few Oracle instances runing BLI backups, the backups are on VxFS file systems, but we are moving to ASM for ease of Volume management. Do you know if BLI backups can still be achieved under ASM...I believe that the checkpoints are in VxFS jornal, so not quite sure if this is possible...

 Regards

Thomas,

I am very impressed by this article & the discussion. I am struggling with a netbackup error since 2 months. I would really appreciate if you can look at it and provide me some suggestion. Just to give you an overview.

I am successfully in setting up RMAN tape (using netbackup) on many oracle dbs but for some I am getting below errors. I dont know what the cause is. I have tried all the commands above & ip address & all entries are fine in /etc/hosts & bp.conf. The only difference betwen the ones successful & ones unsuccessful is : the unsuccessful ones have more than one instances using same oracle home. now the error is
RMAN> run {

2> allocate channel t5 type 'sbt_tape'

Rakesh, it sounds like a networking error. Verify connectivity from all nodes using the respective hostnames. Sounds like a firewall issue or the fact that something cannot be resolved.
